Step 1: The Power of Weakness
We admitted we were powerless and that our lives had become unmanageable.
"I want to do what is right, but I can't." Romans 7:18
Step 2: The Power of Humility
We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
"For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength." Philippians 4:13
Step 3: The Power of Surrender
We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God.
"Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." Romans 10:13
Step 4: The Power of Honesty
We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
"Let us test and examine our ways. Let us turn back to the Lord." Lamentations 3:40
Step 5: The Power of Confession
We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human the harm we have done to others and the harm that was done to us.
"Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed." James 5:16
Step 6: The Power of the Cross
We humbly asked God to remove our defects of character.
"Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me." Psalm 51:10
Step 7: The Power of Forgiveness
We asked God for the grace to forgive those who have hurt us.
"For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him." Philippians 2:13
Step 8: The Power of Ownership
We made direct amends to all persons we had harmed unless to do so would injure them or others.
"Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone." Romans 12:18
Step 9: The Power of Grace
We extended forgiveness to those who harmed us, except when to do so would injure them or others.
"And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him." 2 Corinthians 5:18
Step 10: The Power of One Day at a Time
We continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
"Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear." 1 Timothy 1:19
Step 11: The Power of the Altar
We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, praying only for knowledge of His will for us, and power to carry that out.
"Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Step 12: The Power of Service
Having had a spiritual experience as the result of these steps, we try to carry this message to others and practice these principles in all our affairs.
"Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit." Matthew 28:19
